My Story

Hi! I’m Meghan “Mae” McCoy

I’m the host and producer of Mae Out West, a Western Swing and Honky Tonk radio show and podcast spotlighting the music, artists, and culture keeping this American tradition alive.

Radio has been in my blood since I was a kid. I interned at KSCU at Santa Clara University as a teenager, then studied radio communications under the legendary Phil "Phil Dirt" Dirt at Foothill College's KFJC. In 2010, I launched my first show, Dinner Bell Roundup, on KDRT 95.7 FM with co-host Tyler Kinney.

I was also featured on the television show Can You Duet (Season #1) , performing for and judged by Naomi Judd. The experience confirmed what I already knew: country music is where I belong and traditional country is misunderstood.

After stepping back to raise my family and build a career in law enforcement in the Sacramento Valley, I returned to radio with sharper instincts and a clearer mission. Mae Out West now broadcasts across multiple stations and platforms, reaching listeners who care about Western Swing, Honky Tonk, and the artists carrying the torch. I've interviewed icons including Leon Rausch, Bill Anderson, Billy Mata, and Tony Booth, and I was inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame for my contributions to the genre.

I also produce At Sundown Sessions, a Western Swing and Honky Tonk video series created with audio engineer Jeff Hess. Season one featured my own band. Season two, releasing this year, features The Farmer and Adele.

When I'm not broadcasting, I'm playing. I lead Mae McCoy and Her Neon Stars and have performed at legendary venues including Trout's, Ethel's Corral, and Buck Owens' Crystal Palace. I've shared the stage with Red Simpson, Justin Trevino, and Willie Cantu, and opened for Deke Dickerson, Dale Watson, Rosie Flores, and Big Sandy. My album At Sundown was produced by Justin Trevino at Heart of Texas Studio in Texas, recorded with some of the finest players in the business, including Emily Gimble (piano) , Jess Meador (fiddle) , Jim Loessberg (steel guitar) , and Lisa Layne Stewart. It's traditional Western Swing and Honky Tonk played the way it was meant to be played.

For many years I served as the youngest, an asianist, Vice President of the Western Swing Society of Sacramento, expanding the organization's reach, received grants, created community programs and produced their annual festival. Building the scene, not just participating in it, has always been part of the work.

In 2023, I launched Neon Star Records, with new artist signings coming this year. I also consult with creatives who want to clarify their online presence and show up the way they deserve to be seen.

Mae Out West is more than a show. It's a love letter, an archive, and a megaphone for a genre that built American music. I'm here to preserve the sound, support the artists, and keep the culture alive for the next generation of dancers, players, and listeners.

Pull up a chair. There's plenty more where this came from.

❤️, Meghan "Mae" McCoy
