Vintage Western Swing and Honky Tonk That Makes You Wanna Smoke Pall Malls Unfiltered

Howdy and Mabuhay!

‍ ‍Big news in the middle of the show. Teresa Bowe Landry is signing with Neon Star Records, and "Don't You Believe Him" is the cut I aired this week, a Nat Stuckey tune from 1966. The album is a re-release, so the credits run deep: steel guitar great Doug Jernigan, the late Dawn Sears, and fiddle king Hoot Hester, longtime member of the Grand Ole Opry house band who played with Alabama and Conway Twitty. More announcements coming soon. Putting Teresa on the label is the kind of move I started Neon Star to make.

Miss Carolyn Martin opened the show with "Texas to a T," and we don't talk about her enough. Texas-born, now in Fort Wayne, Indiana with her husband, a Time Jumpers veteran with a heap of solo albums under her belt. If you love Western Swing, you love Mrs. Carolyn Martin.

Bad Bob Rohan and Dale Watson, our Texas boys, did "Stars on the Sidewalk." Bob is a friend, a working cartoonist on top of his music, and a fellow Western Swing Hall of Fame inductee, Class of 2024. We're in the same club now. Support these artists however you can. That part never changes.

Tony Booth closed in with "Full Time Daddy." His name keeps coming up, and it should, especially with the buzz around the Palomino Club documentary. He's based right here in Sacramento County, and we recorded a great conversation that's coming up on the Mae Out West podcast. Stay connected for that release.

The middle of the show stayed lively. John England and His Western Swingers brought "Rosetta." Ray Price gave us "Fort Worth, Texas" from his album Time. The Tune Wranglers took us back to 1936 with "El Rancho Grande." Almost a hundred years of Western Swing in one set. Country Side of Harmonica Sam, our friends out of Sweden, sent more music over for the show. "True Lovers Go Places" was the one. Say that to your man. If he doesn't take you anywhere but the kitchen, girl, you in danger.

Some early Johnny Paycheck (back when he was Donny Young) and a few raunchy corner cuts kept it moving. Jumpin' Bill Carlisle came in with "Woman Driver," and as a woman, and an Asian woman, I was just glad he kept it at that. Evelyn Hopper turned up with "He's Headed South," a track I dug out of a compilation at Amoeba Music. That place is the TJ Maxx of music. Always worth the trip.

We closed the way we always do, with a little gratitude. Connie Smith with "How Great Thou Art," a live cut out of Branson.

If you liked this one, the kindest thing you can do is forward it to a friend who needs more steel guitar in their week.

So long for now,

❤️ Mae
